Worm in a mass mailing from your Twitter follower

Twitter has gotten SO popular of late that it’s an easy target for spammers and worm builders to hit.

mass mailing twitter worm

I just found this warning post on the Symantec blog. If you get this email (pictured at the left) from any of your friends or followers from Twitter do NOT respond.  The malicious attachment is called Invitation Card.zip

Don’t  Open it!

It’s easy to fake things like this so never NEVER open any attachment on documents that are from an unknown/unverified source.  I usuallly don’t even open attachments from sources I DO know unless they say something about the attachment.. Always better to be safe and cautious in this instance.  If you’ve been on Twitter for very long you’d know that twitter NEVER sends you email.. at least I’ve never gotten anything in the 9 months I’ve been using the Free service.

Facebook Fan Pages for Business

Facebook Fan Pages for Business

How hard is it to create a Facebook page for my business you ask?

It’s pretty darn easy…  Even a Cave Man could do it!

I have been advising my clients to create Facebook pages for their businesses even if they have no interest in being “ON” FACEBOOK to connect with friends, family, customers and prospects.

I just created a couple of Facebook pages for two of my clients. They only take a few minutes, put your link on one of the top ranking pages in the WORLD, provide an easy way to get the word out and can serve as a blog of sorts if you don’t have time for one of those.

The link helps with Search Engine Optimization, the more hits your website receives helps, the more people that know about your business and share your Facebook page with their Facebook friends helps… Search Engine Optimization is not that hard really, just follow the basics and spread the word.  If you have solid content on your website, provide great service, value and a product people can use, all of these strategies work synergistically to help your SEM and SEO.

Check these two Facebook business pages out.

My favorite hair stylist in the world Bethany Kay Hair She is now in the Sahair  Salon on in Parker Colorado.S. Progress Way Suite #100.  You can reach her at(720) 851-8522. PING – A Great Automated Social Networking Tool

This was my status update from one of the many automated social networking services that are all over the net right now. PING

“I am testing my sms to blog, facebook, myspace & twitter. by ping.fm! awesome service for posting info across platforms.”

You can set up many of your social networking accounts including Facebook, Facebook Pages, Twitter, your blog on WordPress, Blogger, TypePad, myspace, twitter, plaxo, FriendFeed, Flickr, Vox, Brightkite, delicious, yahoo 360, all the instant messengers, HootSuite (A Twitter tracking program) along with a host of others.

You can update from the ping.fm site itself or from your cellphone, Iphone It’s a very inclusive service that seems to work quite well.  Social Networking can be time consuming without one of these very clever Web 2.0 applications.

Is Twitter Really that Big – Yes it is!

I was just reading the article linked below titled “Is Twitter Really that Big?”

It states that “Many users have abandoned their accounts shortly after creating them, and a significant percentage are not showing signs of account activity,  40 percent of Twitter users have not tweeted since their first day on Twitter, Approximately 25 percent of Twitter users are not following anyone, while two-thirds are following less than 10 people”
I think that statistics are almost always faulty and here are a few reasons I think these are misleading.  I personally have 4 different twitter accounts that I use for various personal and business reasons along with 3 others that I “reserved” because they are my name and I don’t want someone else using it and I “ghost” twitter for several of my clients and reserved for them possible both their @myname and @mycompany name and with most I only tweet with the “my company” name.  I’m also slowing teaching them “how to tweet”… yes there is a way to tweet and a say NOT to tweet…
Several of the comments after this article and on people who “Dugg” this article talk about how they hate Twitter and don’t care about people going to get a @starbucks… noone does, and those of us that use Twitter for business and information aren’t tweeting about what color socks we chose or how many shots of espresso we got in our latte…  MOST real users don’t tweet those things.. we post links to our own articles, to interesting posts we’ve read, to news clips, interesting pictures, tornado sightings, road conditions, free donut day, emergencies, requests for help, information, THESE are the things we twitter-folk do…

The second point the article states is “Twitter is used more as a mass medium for receiving information, rather than as a way to interact with others. Proof is shown by evaluating the followers and friends of Twitter users.  More than 1/3 of Twitter users have not posted a single tweet, and almost 80 percent of the users have less than 10 tweets (i.e., while Twitter is billed as a great collaboration tool, a large number of users are there to consume content, not distribute it).”
I say what is wrong with that? Receiving and using information is 1/2 of the equation, and those folks that are directly people to their posts and businesses are HAPPY to have them “consuming content” as this article states.

It goes on to say “Approximately 30 percent of Twitter users do not have any followers, and 80 percent of Twitter users have less than 10 followers (i.e., for many users, their posts are not being widely tracked or read).”

Again, I don’t see the downside of this? those 30 percent could be kids, could be people who signed up but forgot what email they used or forgot to check that email, some people only WANT to interact with 10 people… nothing wrong with that either.. maybe it’s just their small church group, or their AA support group and the 10 of them hide their posts and just interact with each other… that’s what’s so great about Twitter!  It allows you to use it in any way you want to as long as you don’t post porn and don’t annoy others…
Yet more of the statistics state that “50 percent of Twitter users are following more people than they have as followers, and another 30 percent of Twitter users are following the same number of people that are following them (i.e. users are aggressively trying to attract followers by hoping they will “follow back” but have been unsuccessful).”

Yes, that’s true, aggressively following hoards of people and spamming them with .. look at me!!… buy my stuff!!.. Follow me!!! doesn’t work…. Thank GOD! This is again one of the great things about Twitter… you don’t have to “listen” to annoying people… you choose, you pick, you block, you follow, abuse is nipped in the bud almost immediately…  simply press “BLOCK” and this seems to alert the Twitter Illuminati to go and check out that Twitterer and if they are linking to porn, using bad language, have objectionable pictures.. poof! Their account is disabled.

I did go to the Tweet Grade tool that the article below got it’s statistics from and received an “A” I guess that means I know how to use Twitter?  It doesn’t really say what it uses as criteria.. but it’s fun to use anyway.. “@yourwebchick has earned a #TweetGrade of A. http://tweetgrade.com/yourwebchick” Go and see what your twitter grade is here. TWEETGRADE

Twitter was a big deal before Ashton and before Oprah….  who would have thought 10 years ago that we’d be selling stuff online to people we don’t even know.. “EBAY” ;  “CRAIGSLIST”…  posting pictures and messages to our high school friends “MYSPACE” College friends “FACEBOOK”…. Those are still around and TWITTER will be too!

2 Biz To Do’s for 2009

2 Biz To Do’s for 2009

#1 Join FACEBOOK and TWITTER… They really aren’t scary or hard.

Twitter …. Well, I just LOVE Twitter.  I only have about 5 face to face friends on twitter but I have gotten SO much from my short time there.  (Look for another article talking about that soon).  Here’s what you do.

  • Sign up using a name that is catchy and makes sense for your business. A name like @ George239 isn’t very interesting, and @Hotchick4u is likely to get you booted out of Twitter.    Sign up for Twitter
  • Fill out your profile completely! People won’t follow if they don’t know who you are and what you might tweet about.
  • change your twitter background from the original. (After you get going think about doing a custom background) I can help with that if you like.. email me at milehiweb@yahoo.com
  • Go to Twitter Grader enter your @ name. Your score will be low, but that’s not the point for now, with that tool you can search for people using a keyword like “real estate” or “marketing” “Politics” and it will give you the top tweeters in that area.
  • Follow them.. Follow who they interact with, look for other people in your other area’s of interest.
  • There are two schools of thought about if you should keep all your Twitter following/followers with one account, or split into personal and business.  That is your call.
  • If someone’s tweets are spammy… you have the power, just stop following them.
  • If you want people to follow you, build value and relationships with people, don’t just squack.. Look what I did, look what I wrote, look what I sell.
  • Read TwiTips – a blog by Darren Rowse – A Twitter Must Read
  • Follow @problogger Darren was one of the first people I followed and one of the first that responded to me (a nobody) directly.  That impressed me!
  • There are lots of applications that are free.  Some of my favorites are
  1. Friend or Follow This tells you who is following you that you follow, who is following you that you don’t follow and who you follow that isn’t following you.
  2. Tweet Later You can use this to auto DM (Direct Message) people that follow you.  If you use this, make it a friendly message not a BUY THIS FROM MY NOW! type.  People will often unfollow you if you do. & auto follow people that follow you. This also allows you to send yourself an email targeting keywords you are interested in or a person you are interested in.
  3. Twitter Local - Shows you the people that live in your area that are Tweeters and an example of their last few tweets.
  4. OutTwit - This is an application that brings twitter right into your Microsoft Outlook.  It can be configured in many different ways and their tech support is awesome
  5. Tweet Deck - A down loadable application that lets you see your Twitterland in all sorts of organized ways.
  6. TwitWall – A more complete profile of who you are, what you tweet about, perhaps a picture or two. I wish they had a place to actually link this on your twitter like a “for more info” link.  Anyway, it’s kinda fun. See mine here.
  7. Advanced Twitter Search – Thanks to@denverish for sending me this gem. It lets you search the tweets by location, word, phrase, positive people, ?’s being asked.  Very cool!
  • I would also recommend going to the local #tweetups.  the #mark is used in Twitter to help you organize events, groups.  you search for #yourtopic and all of the tweets and twits about it come up. so watch for things like #DenverTweetup.  This will give you an opportunity to meet some of the @ people you follow face to face.

  • Can you think of any other reasons to join these two social networks?
  • Or great applications I missed?
  • Please comment below! :)

facebook-logoFacebook isn’t MySpace… I have a page there just for the links but I NEVER “socialize” there… It’s best use is for the artsey folks, musicians etc.  But Facebook is a whole other story, it began as a more “sophisticated” Myspace for College kids, but now those kids are 30 something plus and networking socially and for business too.  Once you join  Facebook,

  • use the search tools to find friends and colleagues,
  • create a Facebook page for your business
  • look for colleagues and  experts in your industry to “friend” and keep them up to date on what your business is doing by
  • fill out the “what you are doing” part and send links to articles or interest or your latest blog postings…. or
  • Add your blog to your Facebook account so it automatically posts new links.
  • Become “a fan” of companies you like… Everyone will see this and you even get your name and face mentioned in the ad’s that pop up.
  • Friend Mari Smith.. She is the GURU of Facebook for Business.  See more about her on my Mari Smith the Facebook Guru post here!
